Teen Driver Ed

Students between the ages of 14 years 9 months and 17 years of age are required to complete 32 hours of classroom and 14 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction (total of seven drive times) to get their Texas driver's license.

  • Teen Online Classroom Only SELF-PACED

    • 32 hours of online state-approved 32-hour classroom instruction with parent support (PT134)

    Complete classroom instruction, pass state tests, and get DE 964. 

    This is a self-paced online classroom.  After completing your registration we will be emailing you your access credentials.  Please complete this course in a timely manner.  This course is done at your own pace and can be worked on 24/7 from the convenience of your home.  

  • Teen Traditional Classroom Only

    • 32 hours of traditional classroom instruction
  • Teen Traditional Classroom and Behind-the-Wheel

    • 32 hours of traditional classroom instruction
    • 7 hours of in-car behind-the-wheel driving lessons
    • 7 hours of in-car observation
  • Teen Behind-the-Wheel

    • 7 hours of in-car behind-the-wheel driving lessons
    • 7 hours of in-car observation
    • Student must complete driver readiness packet and present permit Thursdays one week before scheduling first drive
  • Third Party Testing

    AUTHORIZED DPS ROAD TEST PROVIDER

    You may be able to complete the drive test at an approved Driver Education school for the issuance of your Texas driver license, provided you meet the following criteria:

    If you are 16 years of age or older:

    • Possess a valid DE-964 showing you have completed a Minors Driver Education Course
    • Have held a valid learner license for a minimum of six months
    • Complete the ITTD requirements by viewing the Impact Texas Teen Drivers (ITTD) video. The certificate of completion must be dated within 90 days prior to taking the drive test.

    If you are 18-24 years of age:

    • Possess a valid DE-964 or ADE-1317 showing completion of a Driver Education Course
    • Have a valid restricted driver license
    • Complete the ITD requirements by viewing the Impact Texas Adult Drivers (ITAD) video. The certificate of completion must be dated within 90 days prior to taking the drive test.

    If you are 25 years of age or older:

    • Have a valid restricted driver license
    • Complete the ITD requirements by viewing the Impact Texas Adult Drivers (ITAD) video. The certificate of completion must be dated within 90 days prior to taking the drive test.

    If you are older than 25 and are applying for a Texas driver license for the first time, you are not required to have completed driver education, however it is highly recommended.
